Interests

A central research interest is with the cultural, or creative, economy: its location, operation, governance and policy. Beyond this Andy specialises in the social organisation of economic development, cities and economic space. Current research is concerned with the social aspects of the economic processes of agglomeration (institutions and networks), which involves both work on 'industrial policy, creativity and innovation' and economic organisation. A recent interest is with the ‘reputation economy’ of ‘cultural clusters’. His work is underpinned by a concern with the grounding of all activities in 'everyday life'. In this sense he is very concerned with the interrelationships between and across the binaries culture-economy, production-reproduction, and production-consumption.

Consultancy

Andy has worked, amongst others, as a consultant or advisor for the London Development Agency, South East Development Agency, the Arts Council, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Department of Trade and Industry, NESTA. Outside the UK: Hong Kong SAR, Barcelona, Catalunya, Bilbao; the EU, UNESCO, and UNCTAD.
